Our route begins in the village of Kipi and follows a scenic path through impressive arched stone bridges dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, including the single-arched Pistiouni Bridge, the Bridge of Mylos, and the three-arched Plakida Bridge. We then explore the village of Koukouli, where, if desired, guests may visit the Lazaridis Folklore Museum. Housed in the traditional home of its founder, Kostas Lazaridis, the museum presents a remarkable collection of the rare flora of Vikos, gathered with great care and dedication. Visitors can admire a wide variety of medicinal plants that grow in the area and learn about the fascinating work of the renowned “Vikos doctors”. After our visit to Koukouli, we descend the historic “Koukouli Steps” back towards Kipi, completing this beautiful circular route.

The Vikos Gorge Crossing is a true milestone in the life of a hiker. It is the most famous and impressive gorge in Greece, located in the heart of the Vikos–Aoos National Park, which became part of the UNESCO European Geoparks Network in 2010. Recognised by the Guinness World Records as the world’s deepest gorge in proportion to its width, Vikos is one of Zagori’s most iconic natural landmarks. The breathtaking views of its vertical limestone cliffs, formed on the seabed of ancient oceans around 150 million years ago, create an unforgettable landscape. Its rich variety of flora and fauna gives the gorge exceptional natural beauty and ecological value, with studies estimating around 1,800 plant species in the area. Along the route, hikers encounter large trees such as maples, lindens and hornbeams, as well as shrubs, wildflowers and rare species. Among them, the Balkan paleoendemic Ramonda serbica holds a special place, as it has survived in the region since the last Ice Age.

We begin in the village of Mikro Papigo, following an uphill trail. The first part of the route unfolds through a landscape of oak, hornbeam, maple, cornelian cherry, hazel, cedar trees, and shrubs. As the trail continues to climb and we gradually leave the forest behind, the impressive vertical limestone formations known as the “Towers of Astraka” come into view. We then reach the Astraka mountain refuge, at an altitude of 1,950 metres, where the view of the Tymfi mountain range is truly exceptional. The massif is defined by high peaks and deep valleys, with a rare and striking geomorphology. From there, we descend into a clearly alpine landscape, cross a large green valley, and climb again to 2,050 metres, where Drakolimni is located — an alpine lake of unique natural beauty. Its depth reaches up to 9 metres, and its waters are home to impressive alpine newts, which locals traditionally referred to as “little dragons”. From the northern side of the lake, there are outstanding views towards the Smolikas mountain range and the valley of the Aoos River, while from the eastern side, the northwestern face of Gamila offers an equally spectacular panorama.
